Losing oneself in the moment is what the main characters in this book accomplished on the tennis court; learning some lessons about life along the way occurred for the AIDS doc but not his medical student/intern/tennis partner/friend. The medical parts showed the author's meticulous approach to the physical exam & the tennis theme was both historical & in the moment, making for added interest.
The inexplicability of severe substance use is an underlying message, that it can kill despite all the knowledge & considerable talent that David had. Sad but true!
