Stockett does a wonderful job of capturing the feel of the times and working it naturally into the story. Her characters have many sides and I like that even the oblivious housewives who populate The Help are not painted as simply unredeemable people (in most cases), nor are the much put upon help depicted as women without flaws. The story offers a great deal of complexity, which is as it should be. I got a few tears in my eyes when I read at the end that Kathryn Stockett was inspired to write The Help as a tribute to a woman who worked tirelessly in her home when she was a little girl.
