Goodbye to All That was written in a flat-out burning rage. I don't believe a more scathing memoir of a young man's experiences as a soldier has ever been written, and it is cathartic to read a book written in such high choler. Not only does the author thunder against all that happened to him in World War I, but also the phlegmatic British society of his youth and his upbringing. The battlefield accounts herein are harrowing enough to turn anyone into a peace activist. Well done, Mr. Graves.
