I don't understand the hype.

Cloud Atlas is a series of stories, mostly unrelated. David Mitchell explores different styles as he pieces this novel together. Some of them work, some don't. Over all, I think the plot is confusing.

Mitchell unfolds the stories like a matryoshka doll; he links the stories together, but often using only a word or two that the reader is supposed to grasp and say "Aha!"

It didn't work for me. The clues were so miniscule I had to ask for assistance in one of the chapters - even after I knew what to look for - and when I finally found it, it was just one word. ONE WORD? A one word hint is just too obscure to make the connections work, IMHO.
