Cherise Sinclair is the author who introduced me to the exciting world of BDSM through her Masters of the Shadowlands series. Every story has been sweet, funny, and very sexy, and the Masters and their subs are always wonderful, loving, and sometimes emotionally and physically scarred people who I can’t help but care about. I can’t explain it, but there’s just something in the way Ms. Sinclair tells a story, the way she pulls us into the minds and hearts of these people that makes everything between them feel so… right. And while this was definitely not the story I expected, nor can I say I even begin to understand the Master/slave relationship, I still loved it. It pushed some boundaries for me, made me uncomfortable at times, but most importantly – it had me thinking about other peoples’ needs, not judging theirs based on my own, and not only trying to understand, but wanting to understand where those needs come from. And in the end, it doesn’t matter where they come from, only that they are people – just like you and me, who want to love and to be loved in return.

Okay, so about the story. To Command and Collar, the sixth book in the Masters of the Shadowlands series, was much more intense than the previous books and the most emotionally draining of them all. Following right on the heels of Make Me, Sir, the Shadowlands Masters are once again working with the FBI to take down the sex slave operation known as The Harvest Association. In this story we’re given a more candid look into what it’s like for those women who have been kidnapped; their lives in captivity, their physical, sexual and mental abuse, as well as the business side of the sex slave trade, itself. There are many distressing aspects about this 'business', but one of the things that upset me the most is the emotional detachment of the ‘handlers.’ I just can’t understand how one human being can see another as nothing more than merchandise, and treat them like animals. And then what these poor women have to suffer after they’re freed – if they are ever freed… damn. Heartbreaking. Gut-wrenching. I was often in tears for them because even though I know this is just a story, I also know it’s not. The names are changed, the places are different… but the people are real. Somewhere, they’re real. They had lives and families and dreams... and now, right this very minute, they may have stopped hoping to ever have those things again. And because of that, I broke down sobbing when I read our heroine Kim's thought, "Dreams die before people do."

Master Sam’s role in this story and his nature as a sadist was touched on, and while I was mildly curious about him before this book, I’m now fascinated by him. I’ve read a couple of S&M stories in the past that left me feeling dirty and cold because to me their sexual intimacies were nothing more than acts of pain. But just in this tiny glimpse we were given into Sam I know that, for him, it's about so much more than that. If I could request one thing from Ms. Sinclair it would be to give Sam a story, because I know that she could present it to us in a way that would take us deep into his heart and soul, and show us exactly what it takes to make him love, and why. OH! Updated to add that I just read this comment from Cherise, regarding Master Sam, on Twitter - "That damned sadist. Yes, I think he's going to have to get a story Sigh." YAY! I can't begin to tell you how happy that makes me!

As I've said, this is a very emotional story, but some of my favorite scenes were those that included the other Masters. Whenever they and their subbies all get together for a party, good food, lots of laughs and great sex are guaranteed. And I can't tell you how many times I giggled when one of the Masters would spot a subby walking awkwardly and knew that she'd been 'punished' for some infraction. Hell, I'll be honest here - the Master's creativity when it comes to discipline would have me looking for ways to be punished, but my favorite thing about them is how they aren't afraid to show their little subs, the women they love, how much they are adored.

The bottom line – Once again Cherise Sinclair has delivered a book that not only touched my heart, it captivated me. Was the story perfect? No, but it's damned close! For me, when it's all said in done, it's how I feel when I finish that final page, that final thought, that matters most. To Command and Collar made me feel things I hadn’t felt before, and want things I didn’t know I ever could. Master Raoul and Kimberly, Master Sam, Linda… and especially Holly… will stay with me in my thoughts for a very long time.

Note: This book contains anal and oral sex, and intense scenes of sexuality, including whipping, spanking and bondage, as well as descriptions of varying non-consensual acts forced on the captive women.

Steamywindows♥♫ You know, I loved that she portrayed Kim's recovery with such a positive view and outcome.

I also love that she has characters with all kinds of personalities and body types (Linda is a larger woman).

UniquelyMoi ... So I Can Shine... Yes, I completely agree!! I'll be looking forward to Sam's and Linda's story almost as much as I was Marcus' story.

Cindy I liked your review and have never read anything by this author, I have added this to my to read list based on your review.

UniquelyMoi ... So I Can Shine... I hope you love it, Cindy, but I would suggest reading, at least, the book before this one, Make Me, Sir So that you know the backstory.

Carin Can I just say "ditto", Dhes? I thought you nailed the review and very plainly iterated what has been going on through my head. I've been struggling with my own review of this book - based on other reviews and comments - and you stated very succinctly and efficiently what I've been trying to say myself. While the master/slave relationship isn't one that I can necessarily relate too, it is one I appreciate because it is something that is important to these characters. And, I thought the entire dynamic between Raoul and Kim was just perfect - for them.

UniquelyMoi ... So I Can Shine... Thank you, Carin! I'm so glad you think I nailed it, because it wasn't easy. I sobbed through reading the book and writing the review.

What an emotional roller-coaster! But in the end, I loved it, and I find I'm very thankful that there are people out there who can fulfill each other's needs, because I can't imagine anything worse than going through life feeling so alone.

Thank you again!

Jen So you are happy about what seems to be Sam's story? I don't know if I like the pairing.

Great review though and I did love this book.

UniquelyMoi ... So I Can Shine... Thanks, Jen!

Yes...while I'm uncertain about how it will turn out, I do want to read Sam's story. I've been interested in reading a sadist's book, but I've been worried that it would be all about pain and no emotion. But I'm trusting that Cherise can give us some great insight into the mind, and heart, of a sadist. Whether I'll like it... I haven't a clue, but if anyone can do it, she can.

Robin So glad you liked it. None of them disappoint. I just love this series. Waiting for Sally's book.

YOU NAILED IT Dhes!
Every once in a while, I find an author that does justice to BDSM and doesn't leave me feeling dirty, or that I've just read porn (hey to each his/her own, but not my cuppa).
Even though I'm not into this myself, I enjoy reading about it, and books written respectively and emphasize that it's consensual, not abusive, and safe (safewords) helps me to understand and appreciate the needs/wants of others.
What an AMAZING review!
Thank you for that, and for giving me a 'heads-up on this series!

It is interesting that you said that the author lets you see how it is consensual and that is sensual for the people participating in it. I don't participate in it either and as with many books I can see why it would intrigue people to try it and how every relationship has an edge. This is just how they choose to act it out.

I'm looking forward to her book, too! That'll be amazing, no doubt! Think 2 FBI agents and find ways to keep her sassy mouth busy??

Thank you, and you're welcome! I just adore Cherise Sinclair's stories. I love that they're about more than just kinky sex. They make me stop and think. I've learned things about myself while reading her books, and that alone makes them worth my time, you know?

Enjoy the series, Lady H. It's a favorite of mine. And CS is an autobuy author for sure.

Yep! And as long as no one gets hurt - against their will - and as long as children aren't involved, who the hell are we to say what's okay for someone else to do in the sanctity of their intimate relationships?

I agree no children and for me no animals

UniquelyMoi ... So I Can Shine... Yeah, someone here on GR told me some horror stories about beastiality and how animals often have to be put to sleep because of it. :(

Karla Great review Dhes! I've heard so many great things about this series, but I hesitate, because I read Master of the Mountain and didn't care for it, but your review makes me want to give this series a chance.

UniquelyMoi ... So I Can Shine... I'll be honest, Karla, I love them all, but... the books really become... compelling, emotional stories, starting with Make Me, Sir. That one and To Command and Collar and especially This Is Who I Am were, in my opinion, her best books and three of my favorite reads. They deal with human sex trafficking and the aftermath for the victims.

Irena Karla wrote: "Great review Dhes! I've heard so many great things about this series, but I hesitate, because I read Master of the Mountain and didn't care for it, but your review makes me want to give this series..."

I think the first, Club Shadowlands, is free on Amazon. Each book introduces something new. They get more and more serious as the new stories come.

Agreed. I love them all, but like we say, they do become more intense, more emotional with each new story.

Denise~The Procrastinating Book Diva~ Wonderful review :) I struggled with this one because as much as I liked Raoul and Kimberly I couldn't wrap my head around her getting into that kind of relationship so soon after her ordeal. But like you said most of the times we judge based on our own preferences - which I did. However, still love Cherise and this series will always be an auto buy for me.

UniquelyMoi ... So I Can Shine... Thank you, Denise! Are you excited for Sally's story?
