The Freedom Writers Diary is a collection of journal entries written by high school students who were labeled as “unteachable” and "at-risk" of failing school and life in general. Their high school English teacher, Erin Gruwell, used the themes of hatred, violence, and racism to initiate a new approach to teaching her students to enjoy reading and writing. Over the course of four years, 150 students log diary entries that capture their academic and life experiences and reveal how one teacher inspired them to make a difference in the world.
