In Beverly Cleary’s most recent book, Ramona Quimbly, the protagonist of many of Cleary’s books, is excited about her new baby sister, Roberta, when she begins the fourth grade. Determined to make fourth grade the best school year yet, Ramona struggles with Mrs. Meacham’s difficult spelling words, jealousy over her sister Beezus’s new babysitting jobs, a crush on a boy called Yard Ape, and a distaste for Susan, a girl in her class. Despite the obstacles of fourth-grade, Ramona manages to overcome them with spunk; she makes a new best friend, Daisy Kidd, gets her chance to babysit Roberta, and ends the year with a birthday party that she soon won’t forget. This transitional chapter book is perfect for third and fourth graders to read independently and would be an excellent addition to a classroom library. Because the plot is episodic, I would consider assigning one chapter to my students to read in order to check their reading comprehension. However, I would not assign the entire novel because some boys in the class might not enjoy the female protagonist who finds a best friend that she can play dress up with. Furthermore, the pink cover are is rather girly and may also turn away male readers.
