Read on November 20, 2011 — I own a copy, read count: Once

This won The Bram Stoker Award for best horror novel of the year? No wonder horror novels are not the hot property they once were. This novel begins with an interesting premise and then slids into sexual deviancy of the demonic kind that does nothing to increase the horror or the dread. The story concerns a recently relocated Chicago reporter who has stumbled upon his new found town's little secret: every year someone falls from a specific cliff. Unstoppable in his pursuits, Joe Kieran comes upon a secret pact, or "Covenant", with a demon made over 100 years ago. Promising idea that becomes sexual claptrap. True dread exisits ofr the first two books, but then it takes unbelievable, and unnecessary, trip to kinksville. Really disappointing. I'm glad I'm no longer a member of the "Horror Book Club" for Leisure Fiction, as this wasn't scary, just dumb. Saddly, this is what the majority of their selections were for me. Avoid this book and weep for the state of modern horror.
