damn. this book is HEAVY. but powerful... and moving.
it's not a nice read (as in, not for those who are looking for happy endings, or at least even closure). but it so very craftily captures moments in time and space that the harrowing moments leave you with such a desperate longing and grasping for the happy things in the protagonist's life that it makes those very moments even sweeter than if they were from another, more plainly joyful novel.
at times it may have its technical pitfalls and bothersome plot wiggles - but at the end of the day the world of Bone Boatwright gets in your head. it certainly brings the full gravity of her situation and the situation of others like her into full focus.

oh, how delicate the balance of childhood happiness and innocence.
