I most admire Linda Howard because she does a good job depicting heroines who can take care of themselves in wildnerness and adventuresome situations. They don't necessarily need a man to pop up and save them. Yet, yep, a man is around, which only adds to the story, whether he's pivotal in the rescue or not. (In Prey, he is in on the rescue, but that does NOT mean the heroine is an incapable damsel in distress--she can kick butt). Linda Howard can create an entertaining read with action, detail, and credible characters. I also like her humor and that her characters are well developed and likable. She also writes explicit sex scenes, which are not on my list of favorite reaing material, but she does most everything so well that I continue to pick up her books and I'm not disappointed.
