The Unbearable Book Club for Unsinkable Girls follows the story of four soon to be eleventh graders named Adriane, CeeCee, Jill, and Wallis. Adriane, the main character of the book, is someone I have mixed feelings about. In some ways, she was innocent and nice to other people. However, she was very easily angered and frustrated and entirely too susceptible to peer pressure. CeeCee was the typical queen bee of the group and it was obvious to me that she was a bad egg. I was annoyed that Adriane couldn’t see through her perfect mask sooner and realize she was puller her down a bad path. Jill was an over achiever with a strict moral compass. She understood when the other girls did something wrong and had an actual plan for life after high school to be a nurse. Wallis was as CeeCee said “the X factor or wildcard”. She was a quiet thirteen year old who had skipped several grades and hated having her picture taken. I loved the element of mystery she added to the story.
The book clubs recommendations were actually really interesting. I was surprised to learn that, similarly to Adriane, the book Frankenstein was the only book I was familiar with. The House on Mango Street sounded particularly interesting and I may pick it up soon at my local library. The girls’ and their mothers’ take on the books always served to make me laugh. Adriane’s definition of common literary terms did as well.
