Sachs is a world reknowned economist who goes into detail about his work in Guatemala, India, Poland, and Russia, which put him on the map. Many of these countries face hyperinflation, and he guided them to stabilize their money, and receive debt cancellation from other countries – a very controversial issue at the time. In the beginning he explains what the poverty trap is – how some countries cannot even get on the first rung of the economic ladder because of their lack of natural resources, propensity to disease, geographic location, and lack of social and economic infostructure. One of the most valuable parts of his book is when he dispels many of the misconceptions about why sub-Sahara African countries remain so poor while Asian countries are thriving.
