This is one of my favorite books of 2011, along with Chime, Daughter of Smoke and Bone and Finnikin of the Rock. Every year, men attempt to tame the wild horses that come from the sea enough to race them in the annual Scorpio Races. This year, Puck Connolly - a girl - is entering the races in a desperate effort to keep the remaining members of her family together. Meanwhile, 4-time winner Sean Kendrick has more riding on this race than ever before - the chance to finally claim the horse who understands him better than any person does. The wild island setting is vivid, the concept of water horses captivating. I really liked the characters - Puck's dry sense of humor balances the tone of the book, which has its dark and gritty bits, but it's Sean's steady devotion that really moved me.
