The book is an answer to the question "What is Byzantine history?" Its answer is split among chapters which focus on a certain aspect of Byzantium. The chapters are also in a sort of chronological order, and the book doesn't jump around between eras too much.

I found it an enjoyable read. If you want to know more about Byzantium than wikipedia can provide, this book is a good starting point.
