The Time in Between
by María Dueñas
by María Dueñas
The Time in Between takes place in Madrid, Spain right as the Spanish Civil War is brewing and leading into World War II. It is about a seamstress who saw the world differently from the her childhood life in Madrid to her participation of an undercover agent for the Allies. It is about a woman who grew up naive and suffered heartbreak and misfortunes and then mature as she tried to survive alone in a foreign land (Morocco) and then is thrown into a role of a spy. The settings take place from Madrid to Morocco and Lisbon, Portugal.
The book is so well written that once you started reading the book, you want to savor the moments as told through the eyes of Sira Quiroga. The story has so much details and history of actual events that have happened during that period. The history of actual events are so well weaved into the fictional story that you will learn a thing or two about the Spanish Civil War and the German's and English's influences trying to sway Spain of entering into World War II or to stay neutral. You will missed the details if the book is read too quickly. It is a story that have espionage, intrigue, love and betrayal. In some way, the book remind me of Casablanca. For anyone is who a fan of the movie Casablanca, this is a must read book.
If this book is ever made into a movie, I hope that the movie will do the book justice.
