If you're at all interested in the history of colonial America and the Revolution then this is a must read. McCullough has a brilliant ability to comb through reams of historical information and to synthesize for the reader just enough to inform but keep it interesting, even entertaining. This is nothing like reading a history book, it's more like reading a great adventure novel filled with heroic men on dangerous expeditions. The fact that the rag-tag American soldiers, backed by an irresolute congress were able to defeat the best financed, best trained army in the world (at the time) is truly a miracle--McCullough carries you along for the ride in a swift and enlightening manner. The book ended too soon, leaving me hungry for more.

Mike I also loved this book and McCullough's approach. It reads like a novel but you realize the many miracles that went into the American rebels winning some of those battles in 1776. You also get amazing insights to the thought and doubts of Washington as he led his band of misfit patriots against the world's most powerful military. Like Jayson, this left me wanting more. Reading this, you realize how much you DON'T know about the American Revolution.
