A delightful and engaging fantasy tale, once you get past the "real world" sections--particularly the first chapter--which I guess are supposed to be a parody of hipster life and parenting, but come across as clunky and charmless. Every interaction Prue has with her home life seems forced, the adult characters flat and without any redeeming qualities.

Luckily, once past the intro, this is a very small and incidental part of the action. And action there is: battles, escapes, magic, talking animals and plants, and of course, plucky resourcefulness.

The illustrations fit beautifully into the text (love those crows).

Not just fun for the YA reader, but all who crave a page-turning, escapist yarn.
