This is a great book overall and a must-read for anyone interested in mystery, hard-boiled, or pulp fiction. Marlowe is one of my favorite literary characters, and Chandler writes us a clear picture of his life, the city, and the time where he lives. Chandler has a real talent for description and narration, and if you're going to see a story through any character's eyes you can't go wrong with Philip Marlowe. He really brings the reader into the story - after reading this book the first time, I wanted to get a murphy bed just to be like Marlowe (I didn't). This is one of the books I recommend to anyone to read, because I know they will enjoy it. And if you're new to Chandler, this is the first in the series so it's a great place to start.
