Aside from the abrupt ending, I found this book to be excellent. It is the recounting of the journey one man took from the west coast of the United States to the east. He traveled completely penniless. No car, no money, no food. He relied merely on the kindness of strangers.

This book paints a portrait of the United States like no other. You really get a sense of what the people that make up the U.S. are really like. It is also telling the kinds of people that pick up this hitchhiker. There is a definite pattern to the type of person who is generous in the U.S.

It is a very worthwhile read overall. My only complaint is that the ending doesn't go much further than his journey. I want to know what happened after. I want to know what the author did with his life having learned what he did on this journey. Maybe that's another book for the future. I can only hope so.
