Jacqueline rec'd this to me and I was wary at first, given the seeming similarities to Lora Leigh's Breed series. However, while this is indeed a familiar concept (humans spliced with animal DNA and being constantly tortured & experimented on until their rescue), the execution was very different. Dohner takes a more realistic, ultimately positive outlook. Her New Species characters are not human with a little animal thrown in (like the Breeds or the old TV show Dark Angel), they exhibit animalistic traits in their personality and their appearance. At one point, the heroine identifies some characters as being canine types, based on the shape of their eyes. If the concept of beastiality squicks you, this is probably not a series you will enjoy.
If you are like me, however, and shifter romances are your crack, I do recommend this book. While the New Species characters are always human, I find the way their animal DNA manifests intriguing. I have been known, after a couple of drinks, to expound on the pros & cons of genetic manipulation. Indeed, I have a vague memory of being in a comedy club and scribbling a punnett square on the back of a napkin while muttering about gorillas. Don't ask me what I was trying to prove, I just know it happened. In any case, Fury was right up my alley.
Dohner makes a point of saying in her author's note, in the beginning of the book, that she wrote this series a few years ago. Therefore, I think some of the rough patches may just be the author's inexperience showing. The book was about 15 pages too long and had some pacing issues. I'm very curious to see if these issues are fixed later on in the series. I definitely want to read the next in the series, but I only wish they were a little less expensive. I have trouble justifying paying more than $4.99 for an ebook and Ellora's Cave has Fury at 7.99. I will say, however, that since I found it too long, the page count is probably comparable to your standard mass market.

I'm glad you enjoyed this. The third one, Valiant, is my favorite so far.

I just got this series and I loved it ! I agree with your review. It's really hard to try to find a good shifter romance ( which are my crack :) )
I love shifter romances too. Good ones are hard to find. Most seem to be heavy on the Urban Fantasy and lacking in the romance front (okay occasionally but not my favorite) or really poorly written/plotted. The search continues...

It's one if my faves! The first books kind of starts the romance but it gets deeper into it as you continue the series . Curran is my one of my favorite Alpha Males.
