Although this volume continues to be episodic, it also features Natsume meeting another person who can see youkai. Their two views on how to deal with youkai will be interesting to follow through the series. I really like the fact that the youkai are increasingly Natsume's path into the human world despite his efforts to be normal.

The manga includes some violence including evidence of bullying, fights between youkai, Natsume and Nyanko-sensei, but most seem to result in bruising and fainting. There isn't any cursing. Nyanko-sensei is a drunkard, who spends most of his time in a Lucky Cat form. In this volume, he is joined by Hinoe, who is androgynous, a smoker, a drinker and loved Natsume's grandmother.
