I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to finish this book at first, the mother was so reprehensible, and then the children were starting to be annoying also! BUT. Anne Tyler is a magician. The more I read her novels, the more I love her. These characters were so intricately human and flawed, and while I didn't like most of them, I came to care deeply about them anyway. This book deals with the passing of time, and how you never really know what's motivates someone to behave deplorably until they tell you what's going on in their hearts and minds. Worth your effort.
