This is more like 3.5 stars. It was on the verge of 4 but crazy Miranda's incessant dramatics took their toll on me by the end of the story!
'Shift' has such a great premise. It reminded me a little of 'Beautiful Malice' in that you've got crazy new girl who befriends MC and drags poor boys into a triangle whom she has to be the centre of. The shapeshifting idea was fantastic and girls, I must say, do it best. I thought for a while there the story might go paranormal but it didn't have to in the end - it was such an intense microscope of the way we see ourselves compared to others, our peers, but also how we lose sight of ourselves in focusing on others who we think are 'better'.
Olive's fragility came through loud and clear and was handled extremely well. There were at least 3 major twists that kept me reading to find out how these were going to be received. I got frustrated at Olive and how she second-guessed herself about Miranda. Olive was seduced by the things of this world and found it hard to break free of Miranda's hold on her, which made for tense times while reading.
A couple of things that I was thinking along the way: The way Lachlan seemed to 'appear' at the right moment when he'd been ignored for so long before that seemed convenient. The way Olive'd fob him off every single time was totally frustrating. Yes there needs to be some hard work involved, and self doubt here and there, but I struggled to believe that a guy who is probably 17 years old would stick around after being treated like crap for months. He had so much potential, I wish he'd been more developed beyond some of the corny phrases he speaks. It took too long for them to get it together and the romance or sweetness didn't last long enough! Bring on yummy kisses! His persistence was sweet and the way he respected her - but I'm just not sure WHY he wanted her. There weren't many indicators that would make me go 'yes, fight for her! She's awesome because of xyz.' He just seemed like he'd 'imprinted' on her and that was that.
Good length, good pace, good story. Definitely recommend to anyone. Steer clear of toxic relationships!
