Since this is the sequel to the very good 'Spin,' I was surprised at how much this book fails. 'Spin' addressed large SF concepts; 'Axis' mostly gives us another government-chasing-aliens-and-abetters story.

I credit a lot of the problems to glaringly bad editing. Aside from a couple bits about a mysterious boy, the first 140 pages are superfluous. The remainder of its 355 pages includes too much time spent on unimportant minutiae and often redundant explanations of situations and environments. The events of the climax should've occurred in the middle of the novel and then the latter half could deal with the aftermath.
