really liked it

The not-quite-perfect yet still immensely entertaining sequel to 'Trainspotting' catches up with the original cast a few years later, and revolves around the irrepressible Sick Boy's current get-rich scheme: the production of a low budget porno movie starring the derelicts of Edinburgh, Scotland. There isn't quite the emotional gravitas that made 'Trainspotting' stand out in this one, but the story is no less entertaining and ultimately gratifying. For example, Sick Boy is portrayed slightly more one-dimensionally in 'Porno', as Welsh sets him up as the obvious rogue and miscreant but fails to move beyond this role. One of the most stand-out features of this book (and all of Welsh's work) is his use of the Scottish brogue in his dialogues. It is actually something I have attempted at great length and with varying degrees of success in a few of my own pieces. I think it really helps with characterizations and makes the conversations really leap off the page.
