★★★★½ I listened to the audiobook and it was well narrated by Lorelei King. She did the VW bus driving vampire’s, Stefan’s, voice and another vampire’s in that “I want to drink your blood…” cadence that was a bit amusing – and confusing, as they both sounded similar. Still, she did a good job overall and I like her voice as Mercy.
Just love this series! Love Mercedes, her world, and so many of the secondary characters. Three things you should know: 1) I’m not a big Urban Fantasy reader; 2) I’m not fond of love triangles. However, since this isn’t a true romance book it is handled realistically with an authentic feel; 3) Ms. Briggs sure writes a compelling storyline with a mystery that holds my interest – which makes her one of the biggest “surprise-to-me-authors” of this year!
I also had a ton of questions, but luckily I was in a “buddy read” and they helped me along. I was glad I had the eBook for referencing. It gets a little gruesome in parts and you see cold-heartedness in some of the secondary characters – vampires and lycanthropes – but nothing most aficionados of UF can’t handle.
Can’t wait for the next read – or listen.
<--Spring, 2013
The following books contain shorts by Briggs and are set in Mercy’s world, but are not about Mercy. (Thanks Regina!)

Ahhh I love this series! I think you steered me towards it. I am just soooo bummed that I have to wait (or so I hear) until 2013 for the next book. I listed to a few of them on audio which were quite good.

The audio is awesome on this series, one of the best I have listened to, although I have limited experience with audio.
I've been listening to audio very consistently starting this year. I like it because it makes my commutes less painful. Sometimes music gets monotonous, as much as I love it. The audiobooks help me to stay awake, although sometimes they will make me cry, which is not good when you're driving!
Thanks, Denise & Lady D.!! I did a quick review above of the audiobook. No, not as good thing while driving, Lady D!
I haven't read the short story in
. Sounds Christmas-perfect; I'll have to hunt it down.
Oh that is a really good story! Very action packed, and I liked the main character a lot. Definitely up to PB's standard of quality.
Your review is great Lisa Kay. Your wording is perfect, the situations the characters find themselves in is very "authentic". There are a few shorts in this world I have read recently and really liked, but I think you need to read the series before you can get to the shorts.
This is one of my very favorites series ever. I have read them all and listened to them all in audio.
Oh, Regina, I have 2013 there... it just shows on the next line... Maybe I should just elimate the season...
LOL yes. :) The shorts can be found here, none of them involve Mercy. They are in Mercy Thompson world though:
"The Star of David" by Patricia Briggs - Just found out from reading Lady D's review that it is a story about David, Adam's military buddy (and a African American) from Moon Called. Alas, no Adam and Mercy.Wow! There are a ton of stories in that volume.
But in the Mercy world. Cool. I am glad you posted that. I requested it from the library, I will likely only read that short story. Briggs is good at writing short stories. She somehow manages to fully develop the story and characters over a short number of pages. Not many authors have that talent.
PB has a writing style that is hard for me to describe. On the one hand she writes very simplistic, yet is convoluted in her plotline. I guess the words I’m looking for are “straightforward” and “minimalistic” – with a twist. But, twist isn’t really the right word either, because she doesn’t really use any tricks that other PN writers use, where they change the rules to fit the plot. Instead, we learn about the world she has envisioned as we go. She satisfies me in each volume, yet she has an interesting, intelligent, and developing storyline that runs across the series.
Exactly. There is nothing forced and she develops her characters enough so that the actions make sense. And the characters are true to their personalities. I just love her style and writing. When I did my re-reads of these books I upped them all to 5 stars. I need to do a re-read of Alpha & Omega, but I am going to wait until January.
I just loved A&O! I was so smmmmmmooooothly written, it just flowed. Grabbed my interest and ran with it.
Me too, although I prefer Mercy -- right now anyway. I first read Mercy, then I read A&O. When I finished A&O I thought I preferred that. But then I did a re-read of Mercy and decided that was my favorite. Haha, I guess I just like both.
I hear you, Regina! LOL! I love the Alpha & Omega a smidge more b/c I'm not too fond of love triangles. Man-oh-man! It is just too, too hard to choose between Mercy & Anna. Love them both, yet they are
very
different characters. That is another reason I admire this author. She can write heroines I ADORE!
I think your review is on target, this really isn't about a love triangle. :) Have you read the interview by Briggs where she discusses Anna and Mercy .... let me dig it up for you...... (warning this article contains a spoiler, if you haven't read through book 6, then don't read it) . this is the interview.
Thanks for the link, Regina. A bit of a spoiler there with regards to who Mercy ends up with... but I figured, after reading this book, that it was going in that direction.
Oh crap! I am so sorry. Oh jeez. Darn it. Ugh. Lisa Kay, I am sorry. Gah, I hate that. I read it last week and I thought I was so clever showing it to you b/c of her discussion between Anna and Mercy. :( I will mark my original post. Man.
Not to worry, Regina. Someone was on a re-read in the buddy-read group and was leaning that way, so I was pretty sure it was going that way.
Question, Regina: do you think I should remove the bookcover for
from my review, since it doesn't have anything to do with Mercy's directly?
Hmmm, mistletoe and the ones I linked to above are all similar. They are shorts by Briggs set in the Mercy world, but not about Mercy. If you want them there at all, I would put them in a separate row and note they are shorts set in the Mercy world, but not about Mercy.
