I loved this book because of the history. The story was also excellent, but even after living in Hawaii and facing the tension between the locals and the white population (yes, there still is an under tension - sometimes not so under)I did not really understand where it all began. This historical novel helped me understand it so much more clearly and has led me to want to read more history of the islands.
For those who have no interest in that aspect, it is a good story of a Korean "picture bride" who comes to Hawaii, hoping for more to life than living as a wife in the inner rooms of a Korean household. You cannot help but enjoy this book, excellently written and edited.
