This was pretty good. I wish I had read it before reading Moby-Dick. There is not a lot of analysis of the primary text, but the author does explain the context in which Melville wrote his novel. This information would have been helpful when reading the novel since it would have given me something to look for and follow as I read. I think the novel would not have dragged as much had I had a thread to follow.
