Zero Day (Puller, #1)
by David Baldacci
by David Baldacci
The author brings about a new style of thriller different from his previous books. The lead character, John Puller, is soldier assigned to the Criminal Investigation Division. He is tasked to investigate the murder of Colonel Matthew Reynolds, his wife and 2 daughters. The Colonel was in a small mining town of West Virginia called Drake visiting his wife’s parents who were ill in a nursing home. As Puller arrives at Drake he teams up with Samantha Cole, the local police chief. They find one of Coles deputies murdered while he was guarding the crime scene of Colonel Reynolds and his family. Puller and Samantha must talk to the neighbors in front of the house where the Reynolds were murdered. The setting is a surface cole mining town that was used by the military many years back as a nuclear weapon lab where they built components for nuclear bombs. When the cold war ended the military decided to close the site leaving the plutonium and uranium cakes in the building but sealing it with a ton of concrete. The plot has a great flow and more people are murdered to cover up the conspiracy. It is my opinion that the author wants us to reflect on the possibility of a nuclear assault on our soil. As I was reading the book I thought that the title should be “Day Zero” but as I got the end I realized that the author wanted us to know that if we had a nuclear attack there would really be no day left. You must read this book and discover the conspiracy.
