So far it's a weaker Murakami start, without the usual human entanglements; the adventure starts a couple hundred pages in, and I'm not done yet, so I will update this when I finish.

Finished, July 2. The second half def trumped the first half, once they get to the Dolphin Hotel and on the road things pick up, but the book remains vague, hung on only the loosest concept, which it ambles through and then is over without much satisfaction. Murakami is good at surrealism, sure, but I still need to care about the people who've been "sheeped" and the ramifications of being sheeped in order to care about the narrator, or the Sheep Man, or Rat, or the book.
