I CANNOT BELIEVE this is still sitting on my currently-reading shelf waiting for a review! That is just SAD. I'm almost 6 months behind! That's just ridiculous!

SO, This book was AWESOME!! I freaking loved it! I just read the sequel, so I need to mentally separate the two. OK.

Beatrice "Tris" Prior lives in a dystopian world where the society is broken up into 5 factions, based on the character traits that the people feel is most important in creating a perfect society: Amity (peace/love), Dauntless (fearlessness), Erudite (knowledge), Candor (truth), and Abnegation (selflessness). When a person turns 16, they get to choose whether they will stay in the faction they've grown up in or if they will leave to join another. Before the choosing ceremony, each 16-year-old is tested (mental simulation) to see which faction they show greatest aptitude for. But somehow, Tris's aptitude is split between factions. She is "Divergent"... something that is dangerous to admit, although Tris doesn't understand why.

Tris grew up Abnegation, but never felt like she was selfless enough to "deserve" to be there... so at her choosing ceremony, she switches to Dauntless..... and starts a wild and crazy journey to prove herself brave enough to deserve it. She and the other initiates go through crazy training to become physically and mentally strong/brave (weapons training and mental simulations). The book follows this training process, but there are also underlying themes and issues: friendship, love, loyalty, family... and clashes between the factions (primarily between Erudite and Abnegation) are causing issues as well. AND there's the "Divergent" issue. There are people in high places who are working VERY hard to track down the divergent population... and exterminate them.

Anyway, I think that's enough. It was GREAT. I am in love with Four. Just so you know. We would NEVER EVER get along in real life, but that's the beauty of fiction, isn't it? :) Loved it!
