It's a wonder to me that Didion was able to write this memoir. The pain is palpable, the sense of loss is profound. But it's uncanny. Through her very personal and painful account, Didion articulates the universally felt fears and inadequacies of all mothers. How do I live without my child? How do I live with the unknowableness of my child? These questions are considered equally dire.
