I so related to Lamott's feelings as a mother and grandmother as she struggles how much to be there, how to let go, and when to keep her mouth shut. I also enjoyed her son Sam's refections on being a father. I am happy to still follow Anne's journey on Facebook. Would give this 3 1/2 star if I could. The only reason I didn't give it 4 stars was because it was repetitive--rehashing and struggling with the same feelings (more so than Operating Instructions.) But then we do that as mothers, grandmothers and human beings.

Ashley Ah, I was curious about the rating. That makes sense. I heard Lamott and her son on NPR the other day. He seems like a really nice guy, and he talked about how he always appreciated Operating Instructions because it was like his "baby book."

Laura Siegel Yes, Anne asked him for permission before putting this book out and he said something like: Are you kidding? Operating Instructions was the greatest gift you could have given me. I enjoyed Sam's reflections in this book very much.
