Read from October 07 to 15, 2012

Just noticed that this series is switching to a hardcover release!

Which pisses me off. I'm not sure I'm invested enough in Ward's angels to shell out the $$ for hardcover especially when I'll just end up replacing it in PB so my series is all matchy, matchy. (Yeah I know) Damn I hate when publishers do this.

So far this series isn't up to BDB standards, and what I mean by that is that I've yet to reread any of the books whereas my BDB's are trashed, I've reread them several, several times so it doesn't hurt so much having 2 copies.

I wonder if this wiil damage sales?

Kimberly Hey Buggie! Long time no talk!
I agree with you. I won't buy the hardcover versions b/c the rest of my series is in mass market paperback! bummer

Kimberly p.s. i then buy them when they come out in paperback, and borrow them from the library when they're out in hardcover.

Buggy Hey there Kimberly, nice to see you!

I just hate the switch in the middle of a series, it seems greedy to me.

The library idea is a good one because I really don't want this book in HC BUT I know I won't be able to wait until it comes out in PB to read it either. Unfortunatly I live in avery small town and there's no way they'll be stocking this book

message 4: by Paige (new)

Paige I agree. It's greedy and like a slap in the face to all the followers of the series. I've quite buying a couple series right when they come out b/c i'm not paying more for it.

message 5: by Michelle (new) - added it

Michelle [Helen Geek] agree. The ebook is probably $20 too.

Exactly Paige, its a total slap in the face to the fans. I guess they're counting on them (me) to continue buying regardless. I bet this hurts sales though

And Michelle I think you're right, the E-book is going to be around 20$ as well. I'm a huge Ward fan and I shell out for the BDB but I don't know that I've got it in me for her angels.

UniquelyMoi ~ 1-Click RockChick I love the FA series, but I am not invested enough to pay HC price for the book. I wonder if she'll try to snag people by bringing in Lassiter?

message 8: by Michelle (new) - added it

Michelle [Helen Geek] I'm even starting to doubt the "goodness" of the BDB. I haven't been enamored with the last few. Too recipe driven and not enough depth anymore. Too hit and miss. So, I wait and if I hear good things, I'll read, but usually months after everyone else.

Steph Argh. Not cool. I hate when this happens. Nowadays with the amount of hardcover releases, unless I'm in love with the series and willing to fork over the cash, I actually buy the ebook first and if i love it, wait for for the mmp version and buy it too. I do this with Kenyon's dark- Hunter series but haven't loved the last two so I only have the ebook. Kenyon's hardcovers drive me nuts cuz they're and 250 pages long in 12 font double-spaced. So not worth 30+ dollars.

Kimberly I agree everyone! I wish the ebook version wasn't so expensive either. Seems too close to the hardcover.

I was thinking the same thing Dhes. I bet she ties the series together more closely with the next BDB book forcing her BDB fans into the Fallen Angels world. I only started to love the FA series with the last one (Envy) the first 2 were just okay.

UniquelyMoi ~ 1-Click RockChick I think I'd be more than a little chapped if she does that, Buggy.

Hey Steph, The HC price (especially for those outside of the US) is tough to swollow and thats what I'm saying with this series I'm not totally in love with it like the BDB. I haven't reread any of the books and don't think its worthy yet of HC

message 14: by Buggy (last edited Feb 23, 2012 08:02PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Buggy Its making me mad just thinking about it Dhes, because I think thats exactly whats going to happen. The FA series isn't as poular as the BDB so she's going to have to bring the fans in somehow. Do you think the HC change will effect sales?

message 15: by Tammy (new)

Tammy Walton Grant Hey Buggy - not cool, just a cash-grab AFAIC, and you're right, a slap in the face to everyone who has followed her from BDB. Grr. Come to think of it, she did it with that series too, starting with Lover Mine, I think.

I hate, hate, HATE when authors do this.

Actually, it was Lover Avenged that had the first HC, and it's the publishers who decide how the book will be released, not the authors. Which, by the way, makes sense, since the authors make very, VERY little on each book they sell, whether HC or PB. The publishers make the bigger profit.

I've heard that most authors make ABOUT $0.80 per PB and less than $2 per HC.

UniquelyMoi ~ 1-Click RockChick Buggy wrote: "Do you think the HC change will effect sales? "

I won't buy it, so it'll effect 1 sale, anyway.

It's the fans that have followed from the beginning that this affects the most when publishes do this especially those with obsessive continuality issues (me) Thanks for the hate Tammy ;)

Buggy Wow Dhes I didn't know that authors made so little per book, guess I should abandon that writing dream after all LOL

I think this will greatly affect sales which I don't think were that great anyways

message 20: by Michelle (new) - added it

Michelle [Helen Geek] Yep, I won't spend that for a book, don't care who writes it. I think these self-pub authors actually are the smart ones now. They have much more control and maintain control over their work and the profit margin for them, is much higher. If they can control their sunk costs, they win huge. Look at KA. I think she and others like her, are the smart ones. The last pricey book I bought was a Sandra Brown book and it was a huge disappointment magnified because of the $20 price - for an eBook. Skanky if you ask me..

Steph I'm not convinced that sales will be affected that greatly. With the popularity of ebooks still on the rise, the digital format is becoming the favored format. And you have to think, production costs should be lower on an ebook, therefore the publisher (and hopefully the author) can have a larger profit margin. And lookin at my e-library, I already have Ward's FA series as ebooks (my mom gave me the PB versions) so I'll likely just buy the ebook for Rapture (i figure it'll be about $15 for it)

And I have to say, that this HC business is not limited to Ward. In the last year, Singh's Psy-Changeling series went HC (although it was worth EVERY penny and i'd buy it again in HC... Yes, i loved it that much), Kresley Cole's IAD series went trade paperback / ltd edition HC, Lara Adrian's Midnight Breed book went HC last month, and don't get me started on all the YA books that are now HC (YA books in HC make me want to scream BTW). I feel like the majority of the series' i follow are now released HC first. :S

Buggy I keep forgetting how popular e-books are, they are just starting to take off in Canada now that we can buy Kindle's and Nooks but I think we're still way behind the US in sales.

You're right Steph I had forgotten about all the other series going HC this year. Maybe people will either buy in e form or hardcover in the future? IDK I just HATE the switch in the middle of a series

Steph I agree one hundred percent Buggy! The switch in the middle of a series is totally bush-league and beyond frustrating... I commend people with the ability to wait an additional 9 months to a year to wait for the PB version - I can't wait that long when the book from a series i love is sitting on the shelves staring at me, projecting "buy me" vibes. ughhh. *shakes fist*

Tammy Walton Grant UniquelyMoi *~*Dhestiny*~* wrote: "Actually, it was Lover Avenged that had the first ..."

Hey, Dhes! I didn't realize it was LA, not LM. I know it was after I started reading the series and LM was when it affected my reading of the series.

Too bad it's the publisher that dictates this, because really who it affects the most is the author. It happened with Charlaine Harris' Sookie series and really ticked me off.

UniquelyMoi ~ 1-Click RockChick I agree, Tammy! Christine Feehan's are HC now, too. It's frustrating!!!!

message 26: by Tammy (new)

Tammy Walton Grant It just feels like such a cash-grab, and like someone said earlier, a slap for all those who were gobbling up the paperbacks.

UniquelyMoi ~ 1-Click RockChick EXACTLY!!!!! Very well defined... cash grab!

Steph Tammy - you nailed it right on the head! It is very much a cash-grab on the publishers' part! Perfect term for it!!!! Sometimes I feel so ripped-off too if I didn't feel the book was worth the HC price(whereas had it been a PB at 10 bucks or less i probably wouldn't have cared).

message 29: by thuy (new) - rated it 4 stars

thuy aw switch to hardcover? that sucks. i know it's the pub trying to capitalize on the book's popularity but this means that i probably won't be buying it right away. i'll either library it up or maybe kindle it. i need my paperbacks to match!

message 30: by Buggy (last edited Mar 08, 2012 07:41PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Buggy Exactly Thuy. I hate this, My books must match.

Lizabel Barrons-Kattalakis-Quiakides-Tehrror Yeah...it sucks!!! I'm going to do what I did with Lover Unleashed. I borrowed it new from the library and bought it when it came out on paperback, so they can match my other ones.

ReadingDiva The pre-order shows $18.45. My my talk about stretching the budget. I wish they would stop, unless of course they would send out a few free copies to us bloggers LOL.

Buggy I wish I had a credible library nearby, that a great option.

I'm assuming 18.45 is US (cringe) that means it will be almost 30$ in Canada.

Steph That amount is ridiculous regardless of currency... I just checked, and Amazon.ca has the HC on pre-order for $17.46CDN ($28 list price - so if bought in stores). The ebook to me shouldn't be more than $17 and in fact I will refuse to pay a CDN dime over $15. Who knows... if i can manage to wait for MMP, i will!

Michelle the Romance Witch you can always see if you have friends nearby and maybe split the cost with them... like throw in $8 (paperback cost) and then read it but they pay the rest and keep the copy themselves :)

Buggy Good idea Michelle although I'm from a very small town and unfortunatly don't have any real life book friends here.

message 37: by Shay (new) - added it

Shay Vandevander that is frustrating. I happily buy BDB the day it comes out in HC...but not this series...I own the last two in paperback and I wanna keep in that way. I be highly annoyed. DX

Buggy Thats exactly how I feel Shay

Valerie I agree - so annoying.

Melissa I don't see me paying hard cover price for this book either. I'll have to do the library check out and purchase it when it gets released in PB.

Buggy That's what I'm planning to do too Melissa

Aymie Day I have been listening to the audio versions since I travel so much and I pray it will be released soon in that format!

Buggy I would love to have these in audio too. Is it a man or woman reading?

Hbeebti I refuse to buy Hardback for this series! All my faves are going to Hardback and its annoying to me. My books have to match as well.

message 45: by Buggy (last edited Sep 12, 2012 01:33PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Buggy So glad I'm not alone Hbeebti, its going to be a struggle for me to wait though, wish I had a library nearby.

I'll be curious to see if this hurts Ward's sales figures because I think alot of people feel like I do, this series is just "okay" not worth the big bucks.

I wander if the ebook settlement with the Dept of Justice will have any impact? There are so many fabulous books out there to read, that I really struggle to justify paying some of the prices asked.

message 47: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Lane That's a bummer, Buggy. I'm guessing Ms. Ward didn't have much say in the matter--authors rarely do. But library sounds good to me!

Exactly Ruth. Yeah HC prices are high but kinda justified ebook prices on the other hand are ridiculous, I mean really what is the cost there for the publisher?

Buggy Jennifer wrote: "That's a bummer, Buggy. I'm guessing Ms. Ward didn't have much say in the matter--authors rarely do. But library sounds good to me!"

Yeah its a bummer, I totally blame the publisher. Unfortunatly I don't have a credible library nearby :(

message 50: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Lane No good library nearby? That's horrible, Buggy!
