really liked it

I went on a Bruce Sterling binge awhile ago to try an catch up with some of his that I hadn't read. I could have read this one right in there as well. Egan does a great job of channeling the same high brow concepts that make Benford and Baxter interesting as well as challenging reading. But Distress definitely has a vibe that fits closer to that of Sterling. I need to track down more of his work. For the casual reader, be ready to re-read some sections, this is not exactly skimmable material. I found the concepts of the Theory of Everything interesting enough to take the time and review. Having said this is like Sterling, one should also expect some abrupt transitions and some rather harrowing experiences for the protagonist. This one does show its age in that the characters tend to use tablet computers, but all in all an interesting ride.
