An American historian in Oxford is a direct descendant of the first woman executed for witchcraft in Salem, but refuses to acknowledge her "gifts." However, she is drawn into a power struggle over a book on alchemy with dark, age-old secrets. Then, she falls in love with a vampire and things get very complicated with attacks from all sides, family dynamics, and interspecies biases. This book is good at times, slow at times, and after 569 pages, nothing is resolved.
