This would be a 3 1/2 star book. I thought this book was worth reading and I enjoyed learning about North Vietnam rather than the usual South Vietnam I have read. It takes you through the really rough times when communism took over Hanoi and the farm country around it, through the war and quite a bit since then.
The fictional characters were good. I just didn't connect with them all that much. I finished it mainly just to find out if the Vietnamese woman who had escaped to America learned what happened to her father. I wasn't in love whith any of the characters or feel like I was there with them, and I didn't set it down when done reading and think "Wow, what a great story". I just thought it was really interesting.
