Full of Hiassen's trademarks -- humor and love for the ecology of Florida -- Hoot richly deserved its honor. I had seen and enjoyed the movie made from it a few years ago, so I knew the basic plot, but the book was even better. The story of three middle-schoolers (well, one doesn't actually go to school) fighting to save the habitat of rare burrowing owls also touches on issues of parenting and bullying, but never gets dreary or preachy. I enjoyed it and I think kids would too. Highly recommended.
