The Hobbit was the first high fantasy book that I ever read, and as such it left an extremely clear impression in my mind in regards to what fiction is and what kind of stories I liked to read. The prose is straightforward, but has its own unique nuances that gives it a character of its own, resulting in a story that feels less like it's being told and more like it's being narrated by an actual person.

Tolkien's imagery is top-notch as well, creating clear images of the forests, mountains, and caves of Middle-Earth, as well as giving personality and depth to the characters that are traveling across that land. The pacing is solid, as well, and the story overall feels rock-solid and extremely air-tight.
