Not yet through book two, but idly wondering if this series is an allegory of the current human situation... Our corrupt and insular power structures, the wealthy elite, destroying each other while driving the common folk to despair, oblivious to the great common threats coming in the near future .... the long winter, the dragons, the zombie hordes.... are these metaphors for peak oil, climate change, and environmental collapse? Maybe I'm over-thinking it.

That being said: I really like Tyrion. He's the only competent and compassionate character in the whole book. That means he's going to die at the end, right?
