When I read fairy tales, it's because I want and expect to feel a sense of wonder, awe, transcendence. Maybe terror, disgust, and/or delight as well. This? So far, I've mostly felt an annoyed sort of meh. DNF, no rating.

Anne Have you ever read and enjoyed anything by Hesse? I hear he's an acquired taste.

Jessica Well, I read and didn't enjoy Siddhartha. I think his stuff tries to be profound, but it comes across (to me) more as overly-stylized, pretentious and so navel-gazing(?) it misses the big picture. And while I do occasionally enjoy over-stylized and pretentious stuff, it needs to be mixed in with humor and/or self-awareness or just be completely gonzo for me to enjoy it.

Anne Sounds very German to me! Ok, Swiss-German, but still not fun.
