** spoiler alert ** After thoughtful consideration and reading both a 1-star review and a 5-star review, I'm splitting the difference on my opinion of King's latest book. 11/22/63 tells the story of Jake Epping who gets coerced into going back in time through a "rabbit hole" to thwart the Kennedy Assassination. He goes about this mission without really ever seriously considering the consequences and of course, the world pays for it. If that had been the only elements of this story I would have given it even fewer stars. What makes it up for me is that this book, all 849 pages of it, feels like 3 stories, each with its own story arc. I enjoyed Jake/George's efforts to stop the abusive Frank Dunning from killing almost his whole family because it meant going back to Derry and revisiting a town and a couple of characters that are dear to me because IT is my favorite King book. For me, that story really felt like going back to some place I recognized. The other story I enjoyed was Jake/George moving on to Jodie, TX and the romance he strikes up their with the town's librarian. It was very sweet and charming with just enough danger to make it feel like King wrote it. Most importantly, to me it felt real. Many times, the way Jake/George interacted with Sadie made me think about my own relationship. The end was a little schmaltzy but it was also reminiscent of the way The Time Traveler's Wife ended (another great time travel love story) so I was satisfied. I thought the third story, with Jake/George tailing Oswald and his family was just boring. Nothing much happened until the end and it would frustrate me when I'd have to be ripped away from the love story. I also didn't really feel like these three "strings" were wound very tightly. The end of the novel, which to me felt like just the end of the Oswald thread, felt really campy and too dark and like that Simpson's episode where Homer goes back in time. That didn't end well either. Overall, a rather "meh" book for me.
