it was ok

'The Contender' by Robert Lipsyte, is about Alfred Brooks,a young man whose life is going nowhere. While he works at a grocery store, he still runs with a tough crowd on the streets of Harlem. He stumbles into boxing and enjoys it,and is decent at it. Boxing cleans up his act, and for the most part keeps him off the streets. I, personally, would not recommend this book.

First, the book starts out slow and does not pick up until the second half, where Alfred starts to fight and gets away from his old crowd. Also, the worst part is that at the end where you think it would end in a big, dramatic fight instead ends on a calm note and leaves you hanging when you want to know what happens.

In my opinion, if you are looking for a quick read that may hold your intrest for a few days, than 'The Contender' is for you. If you want a deep, gripping read that you will absolutely love, than go in a different direction.
