The first of the Lord Peter Wimsey books to include Harriet Vane, here she is the defendant in the case. Lord Peter must solve the mystery to prove her innocence.

This is my favourite in the series to date for many reasons - the first signs of banter between the pair (and use of the word "piffle", great word), Lord Peter becoming a little more sombre and a little less sure of himself and so becoming a more sympathetic character. And finally, much of the investigative work is done by women - Misses Climpson and Murchison prove themselves to be intelligent, inventive and practical. It's always a pleasure to come across positive female characters.
