Freeman's debut novel offers a harrowing view of how the intricate web of social class, gender, and random chance can bind the strongest of women and families. Set against the cultural complexities of Sri Lanka, the text is utterly engrossing, and as a male reader, I found it to be a look behind the veil at the challenges women face not just in third-world countries, but across the globe. Very compelling.
