A secular Jew journeys through the parallel universe of mostly-evangelical pop culture.

What's nice is that Radosh says up-front in the preface that this is just his experience, not a definitive look at Christian pop culture. For the most part, he does a good job in his writing of keeping things fair and letting readers know that it's his opinion, not an objective look (there was, throughout about 2/3 of the books, still a faint undercurrent of "these people are wacky").

On the other hand, about halfway through he tries to find the fringes and the things that aren't too mainstream even in Christian pop culture ("After the unnerving experience of finding out that liberal-baiting author Frank Peretti [one of the Big Names in Christian fiction] was a reasonable and considerate human being, I had charted a course for the fringes of the Christian pop culture universe."), and often the reader should realize that he doesn't understand because he's purposefully taking the position of an outsider studying thing.

Altar calls, for example. I agree that the idea of counting exactly how many people respond can be problematic, but his analysis of the thing as a whole is a prime example of not understanding something--not from antagonism, but because he had no reason to understand the idea behind answering an altar call as a new believer or because of other valid reasons.

Regardless, the book is pretty good. As full participant in the culture he was studying, it was both nice that it was a pretty fair book, interesting to see things from the perspective of an outsider (yes, we already knew that Christian comedians can be funny), and also thought-provoking.
