A difficult but ultimately rewarding book. It has no protagonist as such and constantly threatens the reader's investment in any one character with endless new plot hijinks, and changes of scene and point of view. Nonetheless very funny, humane, closely observed and politically astute. The protagonist perhaps is actually post-Civil-War America itself, which appears here as a kind of a sideshow of its own extremely colourful curiosities and attractions. Struggling to engage and exhausted by the constant hijinks at the start, by the end I was unexpectedly passionately in love with one erstwhile disagreeable character.
