Based on the jacket summary, I was expecting a fast paced, who-done-it sort of plot. This is probably why the book started slow for me. I felt ho-hum about the writing, the characters, the overall story. But then, somewhere in between the first quarter and middle I realized, wow, I'm actually sucked into this! And Kate Atkinson is a pretty great writer! It only got better from there. Even though are quite a few characters to keep track of (sometimes too many for someone like me who reads in short spurts), they each had admirable depth; I can't think of one that fell flat, as I've experienced in books this heavily populated before. It was sad and hopeful (I think) at the same time and the ending/s was/were satisfyingly surprising and thought provoking.

Maurene I wanted to read this! It was on Leah's Christmas list awhile back and looked intriguing.
