Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch has been one of my favourite literary characters since i picked up the first of his novels and has maintained the quality (almost - i wasn't as keen on 9 Dragons) throughout the series. With Connelly being taken up with other work, mainly the Micky Haller books and the very decent adaptation to film of the same character, pure Bosch (not just appearances in his half brothers books) books have become rare occurrences so a collection of short stories featuring Bosch, all of which are new to me, is something to look forward to.

The stories serve to fill the gaps in the background and development of the character we know from the full novels, from his first dead body discovered while still a probationer in Uniform to how he discovered a love of Jazz and in particular, the Alto Sax. Each story is set at a different period of his career and in each he appears with a different partner. 'Christmas Even' is a relatively straightforward investigation of a burglary complicated by a dead body where Bosch encyclopedic knowledge serves to provide him with the answer to the puzzle of the burglars death and leads Harry on a rewarding Christmas errand. 'Fathers Day' finds Harry dealing with the death of a young disabled child in suspicious circumstances that has Bosch thinking about his daughter, Maddie, who at this time is still in Hong Kong with her Mother. By far the strongest of the 3 is 'Angle of the Investigation in which Harry finds himself investigating, while in the Open-Unsolved Unit, the murder of a woman, who was his first call out to a DB as a probation uniform officer. It has some of the complexity we expect from a Bosch murder inquiry and a nice twist end.

All in all i would have preferred a full Bosch novel but these 3 great short stories certainly provide a decent fix until the The Drop is released in paperback later this year.
