The Abbotts are visiting with Jean's cousins in her home town when Pat is called to help clear airline hostess Sally Carroll, who is suspected of a murder. Jean joins him on an all-night marathon of investigation, as the case of Charley Pryor's death reaches out to involve more and more people. Charley, the dissolute grandson of a recently deceased leading citizen of Rossville, his brother Jim and his cousin Hank are the heirs, although Hank runs Pryor industries. Charley's wealthy wife, his irresponsible sister-in-law, Sally, her divorced sister, and old man Pryor's lovely secretary are all connected in subtle ways, which Pat must dig out, in the face of enmity by the local sheriff.
